X-Technologies I (Introduction to Text Modelling)
This course introduces XML-based text modelling and the use of TEI for the semantic representation of humanities texts and research data.
Instructor: Sarah Lang, Georg Vogeler
Course Overview
The course introduces students to the modelling of textual data using XML and related technologies. Particular attention is given to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), the leading standard for the semantic encoding of texts in the humanities.
Students learn how textual sources can be modelled, structured, and enriched for digital research purposes. The course also introduces XPath for querying encoded texts and XSLT for transforming and presenting data, enabling participants to move from text encoding to the exploration and dissemination of digital scholarly resources.
This course was taught at the University of Graz in Winter Semester 2021/2022 together with Georg Vogeler.
