Digital Scholarly Editions

This course introduces the theory and practice of digital scholarly editing, including text encoding in TEI-XML, transcription, and digital publication.

Instructor: Sarah Lang

Course Overview

The course examines how digital technologies have transformed the production, publication, and use of scholarly editions. It introduces both the theoretical foundations of digital editing and the practical methods used to create, analyse, and disseminate digital editions.

Students engage with core concepts such as semantic enrichment, the single-source principle, and multiple forms of digital publication. Practical components introduce key technologies and workflows, including XML/TEI-based encoding and transcription with Transkribus, enabling participants to apply digital editorial methods within their own disciplinary contexts.

This course was taught at the University of Graz in Winter Semester 2022/2023, Winter Semester 2023/2024, and Summer Semester 2024.
